Celebrating Leah Varnell’s Legacy at CASA of Jeffco/Gilpin
After years of dedication and leadership, Leah Varnell, the Executive Director of CASA of Jefferson and Gilpin Counties, will embark on a new chapter at the end of June. Leah’s retirement marks the culmination of a remarkable career spent advocating for children and building a foundational organization within the Colorado CASA network.
Leah’s journey with CASA of Jeffco/Gilpin began in 2000, when she stepped into the role of Program Director. In those early days, it was a lean operation, with just Leah and the Executive Director working part-time. With incredible passion and drive, Leah took on a multifaceted role, encompassing all aspects of community outreach, volunteer recruitment, training, and supervision. Her deep commitment laid the groundwork for the organization’s future success.
Her dedication was recognized in 2005 when she was appointed Executive Director. Under her leadership, CASA Jeffco/Gilpin expanded its reach and deepened its services to children and families in need.
Beyond her pivotal role at CASA Jeffco/Gilpin, Leah’s influence extended across the state and into numerous community initiatives. She served for many years on the Colorado CASA Board of Directors, lending her expertise to the statewide mission. Her commitment to systemic change was evident through her involvement with two statewide committees - Government Relations and Accountability Committee, and her long-standing service on the Board of Court Support Jeffco since its inception in 2012. Furthermore, Leah contributed her valuable insights to the Board of Colorado Gives Foundation and served on the 1st Judicial District’s Judicial Performance Commission. In her free time, Leah volunteered with the Action Center and the 100+ Women Who Care, demonstrating a lifelong commitment to community betterment.
Reflecting on her career, Leah shared two of her proudest achievements:
“Helping to start a nonprofit is not a small thing. Getting the funding, community buy-in, stakeholder support, the right staff, recruitment of volunteers, etc. Watching CASA grow and meet the needs of our community and the children we serve has been immensely challenging and gratifying.
I’m especially proud of our work with emancipating foster youth. Our collaboration with FRH and DHS to build out our Youth Alliance program has been life-changing for the young people involved."
As Leah prepares for her next chapter at the end of June, she looks forward to a period of rest while remaining connected to the causes she deeply cares about. It excites her to envision a future where she can continue to help others, inspired by the many individuals who supported her throughout her own journey.
We encourage everyone to join us in celebrating Leah Varnell’s remarkable career and contributions at her upcoming Next Chapter Celebration - June 26th 4:00-7:00pm at Jefferson County Courthouse Lower Level Cafeteria.
